Too often considered as a classical sculptor, symbol of the return to order, Maillol was however an artist always in search of the avant-garde and whose work was essential in the sculptural crossing of the XXth century. Didn’t the art historian Waldemar-George compare his role in sculpture to the one of Cézanne in painting, thus identifying him as the father of modernity in this area ?
His legacy, still too little considered, will be highlighted in this exhibition through a series of dialogues with artists who have been marked or influenced by the imprint left by Maillol in the world of sculpture, such as Henri Laurens, Alberto Giacometti, Henri Moore, Etienne Beöthy, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Minimal artists, Robert Couturier or Wang Keping.
Concepts such as the simplification of volumes, the prevalence of form over meaning, programmatic sculpture, synthetic sculpture, autonomous sculpture, etc. will be highlighted.

Aristide Maillol was one of the most famous sculptors of his day. His work, based on ample forms developed from the female nude but simplified to the extreme of a pure outline, is silent and represents a true artistic revolution that would lead to ...
Robert Couturier, a lithograph student in Paris, was quickly noticed in 1928 by Aristide Maillol. The latter is seduced by the «badly-done» aspect of his sculpture: «You, Couturier, in the badly-done kind, you will do something very good». Rob ...
