Michel Haas is a frugal character who always remained discreet about his biography. He was born in Paris in 1934 and studied philosophy, which was to occupy a primordial place in his production, as well as Renaissance painting which he studied in depth. His work is also nourished by the many solitary journeys he makes in faraway parts of the world, like an adventurer. This search for the original and the immemorial brought him closer to the world of primitive arts and Paleolithic figures.
He quickly understands that his language passes by the matter. It was an experience he had while still a student that led him to become a painter: one day, passing by a field that had been freshly turned over, he felt called by the underside of the earth revealed in this way, by its subjacent interiority. He decided to become a painter in order to engage in this search for what is underneath, digging to reach the substance of the pictorial material and not being guided by a simple desire for representation.Gradually, his relationship to the material and its treatment evolves. Creating only on paper, this material is crumpled, torn, inked, etc. to create works with sculptural allure. This treatment of the material is of such importance that Haas prefers to indicate “technique in paper” rather than “technique on paper” which would induce a primacy of the representation over the digging of the material.
Curious about the spectacle of everyday life, he represents anonymous people in the street, titled by a gesture or an action that characterizes them (the cyclist, the couple, the cat, the bouquet, …). The artist chooses to capture these moments that reflect life in them, leaving an imprint on each one at the bend of a street crossing.
Serial repetition also has a central place in the work of Michel Haas, who cannot bring himself to transcribe the life that animates his subjects in a single shot. Certain subjects, such as the embracing couple, are therefore repeated over the years.
Michel Haas was represented by the Jan Krugier Gallery and had an important exhibition in 1998 at the Maillol Museum. He died in Marseille in 2019.
