Biography

Séraphine Louis, known as ‘de Senlis’, came from a modest family. Orphaned at the age of seven, she worked as a domestic from 1882 to 1902 at the Convent of Charity of Providence in Clermont-sur-Oise. She retained a strong religious influence, claiming that the Virgin Mary inspired her vocation as an artist. She was then employed as a cleaning lady by the Senlis bourgeoisie, and in 1906, in the evenings at home, she produced her first works on wood in complete isolation.
